The House Financial Services Committee voted on Wednesday of this week to approve $15 billion in loans and grants for local governments to purchase foreclosed homes. The logic behind the move appears to be a desire to help local governments combat eroding local tax bases and to maintain foreclosed homes to prevent blight.

Sales of new single family homes slid 8.5% in March to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 526,000, the lowest project volume since 1991, and down 36.6% compared to this time last year. Houston based Dynegy and Zachary Construction have broken ground on a new coal fired power plant near Waco recently, and the plant will require 2 years to complete (late 2012). 1200 construction jobs will be filled and the plant will add 100 full time jobs to the local economy.
