Economic development updates for El Paso covering recent months include:

El Paso Electric’s Newman Power Generating Station is expanding.  The 288-megawatt addition will be about half the size of the current plant.  When completed in May 2011, the addition will power over 200,000 homes.  Construction will create over 200 new jobs by 2009.

Foxconn, a Taiwan-based computer manufacturer, is building a massive plant across the Mexican border from Santa Teresa.  The plant may be the largest in Mexico when it is completed, covering nearly 500 acres with 1.2 million square feet of structures.  Between 20,000 to 30,000 people will be employed by the plant.  Officials expect 60 to 80 percent of the higher end jobs will be filled by workers from El Paso.  The project will be a massive boost for the local economies.

The University of Texas at El Paso is in the middle of a $260 million building boom.  The projects, which are scheduled from this year through 2011, will put an estimated $165 million into the local economy.  Hundreds of construction jobs will be created: 300 this year, over 500 in 2009, almost 800 in 2010, and another approximately 100 in 2011.
