John C. Whitehead and Peter Malkin have written a touching piece today in the WSJ regarding the charitable legacy of Paul Newman.

We made a comment about Newman’s passing over the weekend, but would encourage you to read this quick tribute to this fine gentleman’s vision of philanthropy.  Many have missed this fact about Newman –

What many may not know is that he donated 100% of post-tax profits and royalties from the Newman’s Own company to charities world-wide — more than $250 million to date. He was also passionate about the Hole in the Wall Camps he helped found for children with life-threatening illnesses, and he was deeply involved with a variety of other innovative nonprofit organizations including his most recent undertaking, the Safe Water Network.

He possessed a great vision that has led to the donation of literally billions to charity (from the article).  I didn’t agree with his politics – but Paul Newman was truly a man to be admired.  He was a passionately dedicated family man, an extraordinary craftsman at his trade, fully engaged with pursuits he was passionate about – acting, racing, his food line, partnering in several restaurants, and of course his mission of philanthropy.

As we said over the weekend – Mr. Newman will be missed.  His life makes quite a contrast with what we see in Washington these days, doesn’t it?
